Master Cain and I had a chance to continue our conversation on his life journey in martial arts and continue with his discoveries regarding Dux Ninjitsu
Q. Q. Is Dux Ryu more physical or Mental than other martial arts?
Dux Ryu is both. I have done many styles and I know of no other that teaches in the way Mr. Dux recommends. Dux Ryu is about Spirit Mind and Body in that order. In Ryu we learn about the true secrets of warriorship, and how to apply that in all aspects of ones. Life.
FASST is a process that if followed right can be applied to all things. In fact I carry around what I call my FASST stone. It is a stone with FASST written on it. Everyt8ime I place my hand in my pocket I touch that stone. It reminds me to apply the FASST process to whatever it is I am doing.
So when you ask why is it more physical or mental I would say it is the process of FASST that makes all things amplified.
Q. What is the difference between Dux Ninjitsu and FASST?
Dux Ninjitsu is the classic style with stances, and the use of weapons such as the sword. FASST is not a style of martial arts it is a process that teaches one to become an expert at war tactics. Also FASST comes from Hanshi Dux extensive experience and not from any particular martial art. Dux Ninjitsu has its roots in the Koga Yambushi Tradition.
That being said without Dux Ninjitsu there would more than likely would be no FASST.
Q. My next question is why is Dux FASST only taught to certain groups?
As you stated the concepts can be applied anywhere.
FASST is taught to special operators worldwide. It is a secret technology that Hanshi and Master Sky keep very close to the chest. Not just anyone can become FASST.
However Dux Ninjitsu is taught openly by a very few select instructors.
Q. So Dux FASST is a component of Dux Ninjitsu?
No Dux FASST is not a style but a process that can be applied to any system. Dux Ninjitsu is a style of martial science.
Q. Because of all your other training was Dux Ninjitsu hard to learn?
The physical skills of Dux Ryu are not hard to learn, but the point of Dux Ryu is to become authentically you. That is what is hard. Not to look like Hanshi, or me but to find your own way. Most schools deal with the copy of your teacher method. Not Dux Ryu, Dux Ryu allows you to become you.
Q. Next question is now you created Ninjute Kempo to honor Hanshi Dux Why?
Ninjute is my Zen martial art and it is about enlightenment. I dedicate all my action to Hanshi Dux and my mentor Master Sky.
Q. My last question is regarding the famous Dim Mak Technique. This technique is highly regarded and very well respected in the world of martial arts what is so unique about it?
It is science. It is like the balls that cling together and the last one moves. Let’s say you hit the carotid artery with the right force you can make the interior walls bleed and rupture. Knowing where to hit and hot to hit to create a reaction and possibly death is not unique to Ninjitsu, however with the introduction of the modern day combat sports like MMA many people find it hard to believe that such a thing is real. The athletes in these events have been trained to fight within a set rules structure. The knowledge of hitting pressure, striking ad vital points and applying the proper energy is a lost form in modern day sport fighters. In the days of the Kumite the rules were very limited and knowledge of the Dim Mak could be applied as it is applied within many military units and Dux Ryu. Like I said once before Dux Ryu is war tactics amplified by FASST. We believe in keeping it real and that means studying the human body as well as the effects on it. Dux Ryu is a military arts science, we rely on the empirical. If Dim Mak was just some traditional technique with no base in fact then I have no doubt that Hanshi would throw it out of the system as unpractical and baseless.
Q. IS there an actual record that is held of whom broke the bottom brick with most bricks on top?
Not that I know of. I think Master Sky can stack 7. I know that Hanshi used to place an egg in between the bricks. I also know that recently a Dux Ryu black belt in honor of Hanshi placed glass between the bricks.
Hanshi demonstrating the dim mak is well documented on many TV shows and magazine articles. Despite the detractors and haters of Dux Ryu we are showing everyday on YouTube, live demonstrations, seminars and our schools the effectiveness of dux ryu?
Each instructor has to decide if he/she will choose to teach the tradional breaks. Dim Mak is the one thing that is unique to Dux Ryu Schools. Personally I teach Dim Mak breaks and stay from power breaks, but that’s just me.
Q. Is there a vast difference e in the two forms of breaking?
Yes. In Dim Mak strength is not used but rather energy. Power breaks are just that, the use of strength and speed to create enough force to break the target. When a man is hit with power he feels it in that area. When a man is hit with Dim Mak he feels it straight through his body.
Q. With all your advanced training you had said in your first interview that earning your black belt in Dux Ryu was your greatest accomplishment, explain this for me?
One big difference in Dux Ryu and other art forms is that we do not tech a martial art we create martial artists. That is very different then just knowing kata or how to break bricks. It is what is missing in modern martial arts. It is what Musashi speaks of in the book of five rings. Even in high levels of other arts one still learns how to copy their teacher. Not in Dux Ryu in Dux Ryu you become authentically you. A black belt in Dux Ryu is like having a black in you. What I mean buy that is that you are able to exist in a state of mushin. No techniques only options, no guess work only spontaneous problem solving trickery skills.
Or you could say it this way. I have earned a black belt and I am a member of the Dux Family, through the Dux way of doing things I have learned how to manipulate options therefore I am able to problem solve spontaneously without thought using the trickery skills I learned from the family of Dux.
Q. Is Musashi similar to Sun Tzu?
Well yes they were both geniuses in military and war tactics. Musashi was the greatest swords man and one of the greatest military strategists who have ever lived.
Q. So Hanshi Dux is a student o his theories?
I can only guess that he is a student of his writings. I recommend the book of five rings to all my students.
Q. Same time period?
I highly recommend both the art of war and the book of five rings to all my students. No not the same time period but both brilliant none the less.
Q. Since we are talking about military I know from research that Hanshi Dux has trained military worldwide have you ever helped him train military units?
No I have not. I have trained units on my own but I have not had the honor to train them with Hanshi.
Q. Was your training exclusive to martial arts or military or combo of both?
I taught Navy Operators how to take over a vessel at sea, clear the rooms and defensive tactics.
Q. Do you still train in any other styles other than Dux Ryu?
No. I spent over 30 years researching the best arts in the world. Finally I can say that Dux Ryu is the martial science for me. I have no desire to learn another system. I do train and promote the RAVEN Method, it is a defensive tactics method as well a weapons method for law enforcement, it is also the official defensive tactics program for the world famous Guardian Angels.
Q. So now you train and teach strictly Dux Ryu? Or your version called Ninjute Kempo?
Well Ninjute is now strictly a spiritual art; I do Dux Ryu my version on the spontaneous problem solving trickery skills that I learned from the family of Dux.
Q. Will Dux FASST concepts ever be made available to the public for self defense purposes?
FASST will go public but I can’t say it will be for everyone.
